    As much as I appreciate the credits, and while I indeed did the map, the map is a port of an Assetto Corsa track.
    Full credits goes to SIM TRAXX which did the original 3d scanning and made the Assetto Corsa track. It is VERY detailed and is beautiful. If you have Assetto Corsa, please check it out.
    That being said, it was a long process of removing, optimizing, baking and suffering to do this port. It is still way above the 7Mb limit, but it is quite optimized still. The original map has much more detailed textures.
    Thanks for playing the map tho, hope you enjoyed it, both as players and viewers!

    I grew up in Colorado Springs and have driven up and down Pikes Peak Highway many times. It’s so weird to see a map where I know the turns ahead of time. It is an incredible drive. FUN FACT: The “house” that Wirtual pointed out is a brake check area on the way down, if your brakes are too hot they make you pull over and let them cool off. P.S. For those afraid of driving up, there is also a train that goes to the summit as well.

    The interesting fact about Pikes Peak is that it's one of the cases where fully electric cars have a huge advantage and the current record is also held by one. The elevation means thinner air so combustion engines make less and less power the further up you go, which doesn't affect electric cars, and battery range is not an issue for a time attack scenario like it would be for circuit racing.
    And also, a lot of the track was not even paved in ye olde days. Imagine sending it in old shitboxes with no aero, on gravel roads.

    • @FieraDevilWings
      @FieraDevilWings 3 месяца назад +116

      That part about the track originally being mostly gravel is a story in and of itself, with the legendary Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 holding a record on it as the fastest Pikes Peak run on gravel that can never be taken again. I wonder how one would recreate that experience in Assetto Corsa or Trackmania?

    • @the_real_ch3
      @the_real_ch3 3 месяца назад +54

    Another fun thing to note about how hard it is, when you climb in altitude throughout the course, whatever downforce you have diminishes as the air pressure goes down, and you will lose grip with time, compound that with tires degradation when you race at an all out pace.

    One of the challenges is also the lack of oxygen, because the mountain has 4000m of elevation and in the pass you climb 1400m, as you get higher the oxygen decreases making it harder to breathe and subsequently stay focused and conscious during the run.

    • @bmx22c
      @bmx22c 3 месяца назад +48

      And since oxygen decrease, engines lose power. It is said that a 1000hp engine will do 600hp at the top (estimated 40% decrease).
      That's also why electric cars have been crushing the records lately. Firstly because they accelerate way faster, but also because they don't lose any power when losing oxygen

There are some absolutely great images of this run, because a little movie was filmed around it, called Climb Dance, it’s definitely worth checking out. My favorite part is when Ari is driving one-handed and using his other hand as a sun visor, all while going around 150 km/h.

    I've lived in Colorado for almost all of my life and have been to Pikes Peak and watched Pikes Peak International Hill Climb a handful of times, seeing it in TM and from Assetto Corsa makes me happy. Such a cool and historic road that become a one of the highest tracks on earth for the mornings of a weekend. Also, Wirtuals initial struggles to remember the track just proves why it's such a popular and difficult hill climb, because imagine remembering the track, at 2.8+ km of altitude where the closer you get to the summit of 14,110 ft. which is 4.3 km. You start to really struggle to get enough oxygen to both yourself and to the cars engine, meaning electric cars have an advantage.

      @ Yup, like, there are fairly trivial ways to use multiple satellite photos to create a ground mesh of the appropriate dimensions, but it's imperfect. Early versions of Google Earth, for example, did not have a bridge over the Golden Gate, just a funkily stretched photograph at sea level. There's still a lot of work that needs to go into cleanup, populating the map with stuff that doesn't show up as cleanly in photographs such as forests, cleaning up building facades so they look good up close -- but I also think a lot of that stuff can be automated with some clever prefab sampling.
      We're not quite there yet. But Flight Sim is an incredible leap forward in what can be accomplished for now, and the technology is constantly improving.

    I lived next to pike peak and my dad grew up there so i can give some context. The track used to be a combination of paved and gravel, but in recent years its become fully paved for safety, which also made for better times as you can run slicks. As for danger, when me and my brother went to one around 2014-ish a bike rider died, I think they said he failed to slow down for the finish line and flew himself off the mountain, its all one road so finishers have to wait the entire race until the road is clear so they can all come back down together and there's not a lot of stopping area. Also, in the much more distant past, my dad said he knew a family where two of the brothers had tried racing Pikes Peak and at some point both had died. A very sad story so it has a mixed opinion to locals, even though the whole event of it is fun

      The Trackmania community is insane indeed, but this one is a ported track from an Asseto Corsa mod. Still an awesome and long work from bmx22c making sure the track works properly and doesn't crash the game, but the ones porting google map into games and 3D scanning the roads are the Asseto Corsa community

    For anyone struggling to drive this: Look up at the next turn, if the road lines are close together or you cant see all lines, the turn is sharp. And if the lines are far apart the turn is wide and you can preserve more speed going into it

    I was lucky enough to be able to the event with my dad this past year. It was an incredible race despite having to sit there for 14 hours due to so many rookies who couldn't handle the mountain. But seeing Robdom's 3 rotor and seeing two of the drivers getting married at the top of the mountain after finishing, if you haven't seen the race in person i highly recommend it.
    Also to answer your question at 4:00 the entire mountain is now fully paved so because of so many uncertain weather conditions leading up to the race, the surface of the road seems to change and very every year.

    I had a tank slapper at 265kmh on one of my motorcycles. That was a very scary experience, and the closest I've been to death. Driving on a track is technically safer than public roads. You have run off space and walls designed to take hits

    170 bpm is not due to stress. Loeb is a very experienced world champion rally driver and would not be experiencing that level of stress from a hill climb.
    170 bpm is due to the sheer physicality and focus required to drive a race car at those speeds.

    As others have said driving pikes peak has multiple challenges. You have weather that can be completely different at the top then at the bottom. But the biggest challenge is the altitude and its effects on both the human body and the machine. Most drivers run some form of oxygen in their helmets so they dont pass out. Then as the car climbs it loses a significant amount of power due to the reduced oxygen level at altitude.

    I really liked in the Gran Turismo 5 rally tracks, when you got to a turn they’d say a number and the direction of the turn. The higher the number the shallower the turn. It really helped plan the blind corners.
    Example: if you reached a hairpin the game would say like “2 left” and if there were a wide turn they’d say “6 right”
